Ready Your Windows for Halloween

Posted February 17th, 2012 by Halloweenish

Part of the fun of Halloween decorating is creating scary views of your house from the lawn and the street. Silhouettes, jack-o-lanterns or other window displays can be a big part of that.

Scary silhouettes, for example, are cheap or easy to make and need no electricity or candles to power them. The light indoors is enough to make them stand out.

Single-pane windows, though, can foil your dastardly plans by allowing condensation, caused by the difference between indoor and outdoor temperatures, to drench the silhouettes so they tear up and/or won’t stay on the windows. That is especially true if you have steam heating. So what do you do?

Now, early in the year, is a good time to start planning to replace those old energy-wasting windows with double glazing. Essentially two panes of glass with a layer of air (for insulation) between them, double-glazed windows can slash your energy bills. Plus, there is no more foggy glass and no more streams of water running down windows and pooling on window sills and wetting the floor and/or furniture.

Double-glazed windows eliminate the drafts around windows caused by heat exchanged through the glass. That keeps your house warmer in winter and cooler in summer and saves dramatically on heating and cooling bills.

So where do you go to find out what you need and to get the best prices on double glazing? You can find out costs and the best vendors quickly on line. You can even find reviews of the windows and the installers so you know exactly what you need and want. For example, a UK-based site called All Double Glazing provides up to four quotes on double glazing cost.

Be ready to go big on Halloween decorating in 2012. Your trick-or-treaters will be so impressed!
