Kids are not the only ones who get caught up in all the fun and excitement of Halloween, grown ups certainly also get caught up in the excitement themselves too, sometimes even a little too much more than the kids! As a matter of fact, adult Halloween parties are quite often much wilder than the kid’s parties because of alcohol use. However, grown ups can still have a fun, happy, safe and trouble free Halloween by simply following a few safety tips.

1. If you have any plans of attending a party and plan on drinking any alcoholic beverages, drink smart, know your limit, save yourself the embarrassment and don’t go overboard with the alcohol. Make sure you have a designated drive that is completely sober through out the entire party.

2. If you plan on hosting a Halloween party, keep a close eye on every one of your guests, take the keys away from any guest that is intoxicated. Don’t under any circumstance allow any of your guests to drive while intoxicated.

3. When planning your party and deciding on a menu, put into consideration any guests attending your party that has food allergies that might cause a problem and have you dialing 911. Common food allergies to peanuts, dairy products, eggs, and shell fish can be life threatening and should be taken very seriously.

4. Make sure that your house is well organized, safe and ready for trick-or-treaters by clearing your porches, lawns, sidewalks and placing all jack-o-lanterns as far away as possible from doorways, landings, curtains and any other flammable objects

5. Don’t leave any lighted pumpkins unattended if there will be any children around. All it takes is one little mistake to start a fire, and the whole occasion could turn tragic within the blink of an eye.

6. Avoid giving the younger trick or treaters choking hazards such as gum, small hard candies, or small toys, and if giving out any treats with peanuts in them be sure to let the kids know so that you can prevent any potential allergic reactions.

7. Make sure to inspect all your children’s treats for safety before allowing them to eat any of the goodies.

8. If you have any older children that’ll be going to any Halloween functions be sure to get all the necessary details about where the party will be held, how many people will be attending, who will be attending the party, what time the party will be ending and whether or not there’ll be any adult supervision. Also be sure to set a curfew for them.

9. Take the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of pedestrian trick-or-treaters by driving slowly, and exiting driveways and alleyways very carefully. Continually be on the look out for kids in the street and on the side walks.

Well it’s almost time to end the fun. You could even have the kids trick or treat as they head for the door to say goodbye.

I used to buy Halloween treat bags for my children every year before Halloween. After Halloween the bags end up in the garbage can each and every year. A waste of money … Don’t you agree? And bad for the environment as well.

But, I found a nice little solution to that, which I am going to share with you today. Your kids will love this simple solution….I guarantee it! Ok here goes…I kept you waiting long enough now!:

Gather your children around the table.  Serve some cookies and drinks. Make this a nice family event!

Gather some old shopping bags, some scissors, glue, Halloween stickers, glitters, and some markers. Look for some nice printable Halloween templates online to decorate the shopping bags.

Print the templates on T-shirt transfer paper and iron the designs on the bags. Some popular Halloween designs:

-    Ghost.
-    Skull.
-    Pumpkin.
-    Bat
-    Ghoul.
-    Monster.
-    Their name.
-    Or …”Got candy?” on it.

If the Halloween treat bags match the children’s outfits they will most certainly steal the show!

1/2 Cup Orange Juice
4 Cups Vanilla Ice Cream
Cleaned-out pumpkin shell, chilled (optional)

Directions:

Blend all ingredients in the blender until smooth. Serve immediately. Pour into chilled pumpkin shell for serving if you wish.

Halloween falls on a Saturday this year - a perfect opportunity to have a Halloween Party. Whether you are having a child’s party or adult party there are many themes and ideas that will keep your guests talking for years. Here are a few fun and easy suggestions:

Costume Party. This is nothing new, but you can put a twist on it. You can make it a Pirates and Princess party for kids or a male/female pirates party for adults. Famous people party works best for adults, with costumes available for celebrities, sports personalities, politicians, etc. If your crowd isn’t the type to put on elaborate costumes, simply ask everyone to dress in black and orange.

Non-Spooky party. Kids, especially young ones, can be scared by the darker side of Halloween. If you want a non-spooky party for kids, try a different theme like a sports party (where guests have to dress up like dancers, hockey players, football players, sumo wrestlers, etc.)

Super heroes is also a fun theme. A girls’ party could be princesses and fairies. Animal costumes is another easy crowd favorite – especially if you decorate the room like a Halloween barn.

Invitations. Home made invitations are always fun and impressive. You can print photos, clip art or pictures from the internet to glue on paper. You can also cut the invitation card into silhouettes – like ghosts, pumpkins, witch hats, etc. The invitation could have something that springs out when the viewer opens it.

Stickers and confetti are easy ways to decorate cards. Keep the card stock in Halloween colors like black, orange, purple or green.

Decorations. My favourite party look for Halloween is to replace all of the lights in the party room with black lights. Put black tablecloths on the tables, cover the walls with black paper or black posters. Cotton batting, spread thin to look like cobwebs, can decorate your black table cloth.

Get white plastic plates so they will glow in the dark and appear to be floating on the table. For kids, Mountain Dew is a great beverage to put in clear plastic glasses, since it glows in the dark. Strings of orange lights are available at many party and dollar stores. Use these to line doorways and walls, or put them inside pumpkins instead of candles.

Food: Black and orange foods are always appropriate (such as as orange cheese, Cheetos, black licorice, chocolate, pumpkin cupcakes) as is spooky baked goods and candy. Carve out pumpkins and line them with clear plastic bags to use as chip bowls or flower centerpieces. A glowing fruit punch bowl or colored ice cubes make for fun drinks.

Music. Burn a cd ahead of time with fun Halloween and Thriller type songs. Sound effects are fun to mix in. You can often rent or buy dry ice machines or disco balls if you want to make the dance floor really “spooktacular”.
